RSS Exposed

How do you get good search engine rankings? What about visitors in general - especially buying visitors?

There are many opinions on that one. My personal preference is content. Ideally, I’d love to add a page or more a day to my sites. But in reality, I don’t have that kind of time since I have a work at home job too. Medical transcription takes up a couple hours a day, and while over time I probably would earn more from my sites, I have to be practical about TODAY.

Writing in this blog is one way for me to add content. I’ve added it to a few feed sites and it does get visitors and come up in searches. But I’d really like to learn more about RSS. I’m looking at an ebook, RSS Exposed, as one option. From what I’ve read about it, it sounds like a great option.

Why RSS? Because there’s no worry about spam complaints, people can find out that I’ve added content as soon as I’ve added it and it’s fairly easy to implement. Plenty enough reasons for me.

Now, Blogger isn’t necessarily the best solution for RSS feeds - in fact, WordPress, a free program, is extremely well rated in that regard. Highly adaptable, modifiable, hosted on your own domain, it just sounds very good. I may yet change this blog over to that, despite the challenge such a change would present.

But a blog is not the only way to use RSS. I’m thinking about syndicating my articles in RSS, including instructions for how to present the feed so search engines will see it as content rather than as JavaScript. It’s a good use of content I’ve already written, and I could do a few varieties so that it would be well matched to each site running my syndicated articles. Say, a parenting articles channel, home business, money tips, etc. There’s plenty to be done to encourage people to add my content to their sites, not just to their RSS readers.

But enough. I really have to try and get some transcription done. I did quite well yesterday and would like to get at least a little done today. With Survivor and Apprentice being on tonight, I don’t know how much I’ll be doing in the evening.

Hard Working Day

Doing quite well on the transcription today. Ariel’s off with her grandparents, so I get some good work time, and for once, I’m really behaving myself. Of course, after being sick earlier this pay period, I really needed to behave today to try and make up for some of that lost time.

I’m trying so hard to not think about all the Christmas shopping I still have to get done, of course. With all the distractions this year Christmas is really hard to think about and remember how close it really is. The fact that we’re probably going to move a couple days after isn’t appealing either, in the sense that it limits our ability to just relax that day.

However, I really am looking forward to getting my business set up in our new apartment. Just to finally be done with it all will be wonderful. It’s not easy working between two computers, but that’s what I have to do for now.

New Ideas Are Fun

I love coming up with new ideas for my websites.

Yes, I thought of a new one for the jewelry website. Actually, I have several ideas, but this one shouldn’t be too hard to implement within the next day or two. I’m really having a blast with that site. I loved working in that industry, and figuring out how to make online jewelry buying a better experience online is a fun challenge.

The only reason I probably won’t get it done today is that I had my husband take Ariel out for a few hours so I could transcribe. What with being sick and all, I really need to do that when I have this kind of quiet.

But I really, really want to get the new stuff on my site!

Umm, Ooookay…

Umm…. ok… well, I guess there’s less competition than there is in selling Viagra…

I got a spam email the other day selling do-it-yourself circumcision kits. I almost don’t want to think about it. People will sell anything in spam and online, I guess.

My move has been delayed. We were supposed to be moving into a new apartment December 7. Well, the current tenants are squatting until December 19 now, so we’re stuck. Could be worse, I suppose, except now we can’t move until after Christmas, and possibly not until after New Year’s, depending on whether we decide to use professional movers or friends.

That was the news we got yesterday, which was just not a good day for me at all. I had what the doctor’s office said was a stomach flu, so I spent the day being pretty miserable and drinking lots of water. Can’t get dehydrated when you’re pregnant! I barely touched the computer all day, that’s how miserable I was. I’m much, much better today, and hoping no one else comes down with it too. I’m still going to take things relatively easy today, just to be sure.

Trying to Transcribe Today

Well, I’m trying to get more transcription done today. For all that I got off to a late start I’m not doing too badly. Ariel’s with her grandparents today, so I need to get something done. We’re moving near the end of the pay period, so I have to start out well, not finish well.

Had a little fun with the jewelry site’s Christmas section last night. Who knows if it will drive any business, but I added gift ranges for over $5000 and over $10,000. Yes, it’s late, but I want to see what, if anything happens with these. I have some ideas to improve this category when I make it for Valentine’s Day, which is one of my to-do’s for after the move, that might make it more interesting. I just feel like it looks a little cluttered as it is right now, so I’ll have to improve it next time.

Only reason I’m not doing it right now is because my only working copy of Dreamweaver is on the computer not connected to the internet. I don’t know what I did, but the copy on this computer quite simply will not run. Well, I know what I did, but it shouldn’t have done anything to the program. All I did was try to add a site to Dreamweaver’s listing of sites for me. It froze up during that and crashes every time on load now. I could remove and reinstall, but since it will be so soon that I move I just don’t want to take the time right now. I’m making minor changes using a text editor on pages, but major changes are just waiting.
