Here’s one of those tasks I’ve put off a long time, but I got the opportunity to try making very important documents over at www.itsmylife.com. It started me out with the will.
Obviously, my husband would be my major beneficiary. That part is easy. More difficult was thinking about what I would specifically want each of the kids to have, beyond what I would simply trust my husband to choose to give them. And of course I won’t go into the details of that here. This may be a blog but some things in my life aren’t any of your business!
I do like how they save the names you use so that it will be fairly easy to use the names over again in other documents. The membership is also valid for a year, so you have time to generate a variety of documents or even change them if your situation changes during that time.
One of the big things was the organ donation section. This site allows you to include your preference for organ donation in your will. I’ve always figured that if they’re in such a condition that someone else can have them, why not? But I know other people aren’t so comfortable with the idea.
It also covers who I would want to have the kids if my husband were no longer around - a very important issue! This is something I have previously discussed with my choice, although I should discuss current selection over again with my husband, as some family situations have changed. Our main consideration was a married parent we could trust, and one of the other possibilities we had not selected at that time is now a married parent.
All in all, this is a very interesting and useful site. Not the same as consulting a lawyer, of course, but quite good.

That’s a great looking site. For anyone in the UK, there’s a service called Sure Will which lets you write your will online with a similar user-friendly system.
It was cheap as chips but the will I received was of surprisingly good quality and Colin (my personal will writer! They assign you an actual person you can talk to) was really friendly. Worth a look!
