<description>You stated: "Sites such as eLance and Guru are excellent for those of you who want to offer services. It's a chance to build a portfolio and a customer list. Whatever you do, however, do not underprice yourself."

As a professional virtual assistant, my experience has been that you may build a customer list through these sites, but you won't build a client base.

A client base is a base of clients who are engaged in a long-term, collaborative partnership with you. Your objective is to provide services, ideas and tips that will help to grow their business.

Unfortunately, eLance and Guru are notoriously known as sites for you to find "jobs." As long as you have an employee mentality, you will continue looking for jobs. You will soon find that a business owner will not fare well on these sites when you are demanding professional rates and they want to pay employee rates. This is not the intent of the virtual assistant. We are not employees and we don't do resumes.

If you'd like more information on what a VA is or isn't and does or doesn't, check out my blog at http://elitevas.wordpress.com.
