Pretty much everyone keeps important information on their computers. Most of us have experienced the dreaded computer crash, the one where you aren’t sure if you are going to get your files back.

Were they backed up?

Backing up your computer is vital. Last year I had to help my inlaws with one, very, very carefully as their computer had a virus that none of the antivirus software could removed. We had bought several different products, but nothing worked. So we had to take files folder by folder, inspecting each carefully for any unfamiliar files, to ensure the virus didn’t make it over to the external drive.

We’re talking hundreds of pictures, starting from the time my daughter, their first grandchild was born.

The solution in that case was an external drive. Their CD burner had died on them and it would have taken even longer to burn that many CDs. No DVD burner. Fortunately, we did it, saved all the pictures and scanned them before installing on a brand new computer, just to be sure we didn’t accidentally transfer the virus.

But another great solution is an online backup, such as at IBackup. I like this idea because it means your data is protected in case of a fire or other disaster. That’s protection you can’t get from keeping a backup on an external drive.

The IBackup service looks really interesting. They offer scheduling, so that you don’t have to remember it yourself. If you’re like me and go far too long between backups, that has to be a wonderful thought.

This kind of service can be a bit pricey, but you have to decide what the safety of your computer data is worth to you. It’s a decision you have to base on your own financial circumstances and how badly it would hurt to lose the data, along with the other steps you’ve taken to protect your data.
