Even when your child is safe at home.
I just got such a call from my daughter’s school. A local middle school and a high school both recently had shootings threatened, but these were not considered to be credible threats and indeed, nothing happened. And I really appreciate how the situation was handled.
My oldest is only in preschool, so I only heard about how these things were handled from parents who did have children involved. Beyond just being on lockdown, one of the moms reported to me that they had an officer in every classroom. Every parent did recieve an automated call when the threats were discovered the day before so that they could decide what to do.
Even knowing that the threats weren’t credible, those with children at those schools were decidedly nervous today. And who could blame them?
But today I guess they decided to increase the list to all parents of children in the school district. They wanted to encourage parents to send their children to school on Monday and to feel free to visit the campus so that there would be more adults around.
As for me, I was already scheduled to help out at my daughter’s class on Monday.
The other reason for the call was to ask for any information anyone could share and to offer a reward. I do hope they catch whoever made the threats, as this cannot be treated lightly.
Am I worried? Not especially. There have been a number of threats toward schools of late, and I suspect some of it is people having fun with the idea after the shooting at Virginia Tech. They know people are on edge after that. While nothing is impossible, the odds of anything happening are quite slim.
But I still really want them to catch the idiot making these threats.
