Working at home can be a truly frustrating experience at times. This can be particularly true when things such as summer vacation interrupt your usual schedule. But there are some things you can do to keep your sanity even when things get frustrating.
The first is to have a good workspace. A separate office is ideal but not always possible. I personally work in a room that I call my office, but it is completely open to the rest of the house, and my husband’s computer is right next to mine. This can be frustrating at times, as having anyone around as I work can be a distraction. But it is away from the television, and the kids’ playroom is a short distance away.
But your office location isn’t the only challenge or even the worst for most people. Loneliness can be a huge issue. Participating on forums can help you to get some social interaction with others as well as build your business. You just have to make the most of your opportunities.
Don’t let your forum time be your only face to face interaction with other adults. It really cannot substitute. Get some time out, whether it’s watching the kids play with a friend while you and the friend’s mother chat or some time out with your friends and no kids. And most especially time with your spouse.
Setting boundaries with your kids is very important. Your success at this will depend on a combination of your determination and the age of your children. Very young children won’t cope with the same limitations that older ones will be able to handle easily. But if you combine this with setting working hours so that you can cope with these issues, you will have less stress from coping with the needs of your children.
If you’re going to be taking calls, spend the money to have a dedicated phone line for your business. This will allow you to keep your business calls separate, and easier to ignore when you are not supposed to be working.
Do take breaks and end your workday appropriately. A short break every hour can help you cope better physically as well as being good for your thought processes when you get stuck. Stopping work enough so that you have time for your family is very important. This is important both for your children and your marriage.
It’s easy to argue back and forth about the best way to dress to work at home. Some work just fine in their pajamas. Others need to dress more professionally in order to feel truly productive. Many are in between, and simply need to dress as they would for a regular day at home.
You have to expect that some days nothing will go as planned. The kids will need more attention, customers will be difficult, your computer will crash. But a good attitude and the ability to cope with setbacks will help tremendously.
