Before I get started, remember that they are ages 5 and 2, so the limitations won’t always apply as they get older. Other things… my fellow parents will probably be able to guess which won’t happen if I have anything to say about it.
- Ear piercing for my son. My daughter will probably start getting interested within the next year or two, and if I think she’ll be responsible for it, fine.
My son can wait until he’s grown up if he ever wants that. - Cross the street alone. Not yet. As I said, they’re 5 and 2.
- Play around the pool alone. I like to think this one is obvious.
- Cook on the stove. My son (2 years old) badly wants to do this already. Obviously he has a few years to wait, but in the meantime he loves helping me assemble the ingredients and mix if necessary. He especially loves tasting all the spices.
- Draw on the walls. I don’t care that the crayons and markers I buy are washable, they can’t do it. Although when we own our own place I may think about putting a huge whiteboard on one wall.
- Answer the phone. Actually, I’m surprised my daughter hasn’t tried this one yet. But once the time comes I’ll have to lay down some rules on it.
- Eat dessert without eating all their dinner. Nope, not in my house. Now at Grandma’s, that’s a different story and just fine by me. Grandparents are permitted to bend the rules.
- Pet strange dogs without permission.
- Pretend a crystal bowl is a computer. Yes, my daughter really tried this at my mother’s house and got into trouble.
- Visit most websites. At their ages, they’re lucky if I let them touch the computer. Although my son is quite fond of Google Earth.
- Drive my car. Now when they’re old enough to get a license, we’ll talk.
- Hit.
- Eat junk food too early in the day or too much of it. We don’t keep much in the house, but when it’s there, they can only have it later in the day.

I let my 4 years old princess pick up phone calls. She always chats with the caller before pass the line to us. I am wondering how to train her up for this…
Hmmm, have you been peeking at my list of “can’t dos”?? hehehe! All very good points for ages two and five!
Those are good rules.
My mom did similar things with me too. Have a great weekend!
They can’t they answer the phone? *really curious here
*
A great list…
But think about this, if a telemarketer calls and she answers it, then she can speak for hours and hours and hours…
Stop by and have a look at our list if you like, it went up this morning!
Bernie
Good rules, mine are pretty much the same, except my kids are younger!
Man oh man…#11. So, my son said, OK, I’ll get my own car! He’s 17, mind you, but we tried to get away with no driving for a while longer, but he found a car of his own. YIKES!
Amen. I am SO with you!
Happy TT!
Can’t answer the phone in large part because, oddly enough, neither is interested yet. Once my daughter gets interested I’ll teach her how. Without at least a few rules in place, I’d rather she didn’t.
But I am really surprised my daughter hasn’t tried answering it yet or even asked if she could. She does ask about MAKING phone calls.
Hmm…at what age will the kids be able to answer the phone? I don’t think I was ever not able to answer the phone, but I did…I had to answer it the correct way.
My TT is up…come on over!
And that’s why they can’t. They just don’t know the right way yet. And since neither seems interested we haven’t pushed the matter.
I agree on all of these! Except for answering the phone. My kids are 3 and 6. The 3 year old answers the phone all the time. Especially when it’s a solicitor. Funny, they never seem to get to talk to us.
A very sensible set of rules.
And I especially I agree about the writing/drawing on the walls.
When my daughter was little she tried it all the time.
Thanks for sharing & visiting,
Frances
I totally agree about #6. There’s nothing more infuriating than phoning someone and getting some kid answering. Even worse are people who get their kids to record their answering machine message, and seem to think it cute and adorable.
