Lynne, my mother-in-law did the same thing back when she was raising my husband, except not until he got into high school. Then she stayed with the job for years after he graduated.

I was a SAHM until my daughter entered kindergarten. I loved being home with her and wouldn't change it for anything. But, when she started school, I started volunteering with the school district. I then went to work for the district. It was the best of both worlds! I was on my daughters schedule so was off when she was off and we had all the same holidays. We recently relocated, so I'm back to being a SAHM. I'm going to enjoy it for as long as I can!

I agree with Kate above... keep things fun and flexible and give your kids the freedom to explore especially during the summer months. Plus having them help with the chores and home activities make it more fun for everyone.

Then set aside a time for everyone to just be on their own for a bit during the day (call it rest time or quiet time or whatever)... it's amazing how just an hour of alone time can be refreshing!

Varying your routine is an excellent suggestion. It's wonderful for keeping kids on an even keel, too. Often, I'll find myself wondering why my normally wonderful son has started getting testy and too much of a handful, then realize we've been doing the same thing day in and day out.

A quick outing at the park lets him burn off some energy, while I usually get a chance to thumb through a magazine or talk with another mom. It's amazing how just having someone else nod and say, "Oh, I go through that, too!" can really make it all seem less stressful again.
