There’s a decided lack of good information about where I live. Some people just a few miles away have been allowed to go back, but when I look where I live, the maps don’t even list it as an evacuated area. Considering the fire was within 2 miles of it, I don’t believe that, yet it was the official City map.
And I also know that a coworker of my mother’s was allowed to go back after being evacuated (she knows she was told to evacuate) and the site doesn’t show her area as evacuated at all. It’s very frustrating.
But I’m staying put for now. The corridor along the 67 clear down to Fallbrook has been evacuated. I’m within 5 miles of that, mostly backcountry between my house and the 67, so I really can’t see going back yet.
A home just blocks from my inlaws burned. Must have been an ember, because the house is completely isolated from all the others that burned in their area.
I’ve read that 513,000 homes are under evacuation orders. not sure if that is San Diego county or California as a whole. It is estimated that at least 1000 homes have been damaged or destroyed.
Sometimes people annoy me, though. We were watching the news this morning, and they showed some firefighteres taking a break near some homes in Spring Valley. The fire was visible, but a goodly distance off. People called the station because they were upsdet that the firefighters weren’t doing their jobs. Considering the work the firefighters have been doing these past days, I think a break was well within reason. And the houses they were taking a break near? Still there so far as I can tell. They’ve shown that same area several times.
And then there are the moron I just watched on the news. Spent two hours refusing to evacuate, fighting the fires as his home burned and arguing with firefighters. They finally got rid of him, saved his home but several of his neighbors’ homes burned. You just have to wonder if any of those could have been saved if he hadn’t been wasting the firefighters’ time arguing with them.
I know it’s hard to watch your home burn. I can’t imagine having it happen, even though I know mine has been at risk through much of this. But the best you can do at a time like this is let the professionals do their job.
