My son’s costume this year was pretty difficult. He was a blue dragon. It came out really, really beautiful, but I had to stay up late the night before Halloween finishing it. The fires last week really messed up my timetable as I was too distracted to work on the costume.
Anyhow…
- Buy a blue hooded sweatshirt and sweatpants. This turned out to be harder than I expected, as most had logos on them and I needed plain.
- Buy felt to cut out the spikes and tail.
- Buy paints to make the dragon more interesting. I bought glow in the dark, siliver glitter and red glitter paints. These also helped to make him more visible in the dark.
- Buy butterfly wings to rework into dragon wings. The only wings that would have worked for a dragon that I saw were taller than my son.
- Evacuate for fires. Pack costume supplies but neglect to do anything with them.
- 5 days before Halloween suddenly realize how close the big day is.
- Start cutting out spikes for along the dragon’s back. Double thickness felt to make them firm enough to stand up.
- Use fabric glue to hold spikes together as a quicker solution than sewing.
- Give wings to husband to rebend and paint plain blue rather than butterfly pattern.
- Start painting spikes, sweatsuit and butterfly wings with glow in the dark, silver and red sparkle paint.
- Sew a tail.
- Attach spikes to costume. Grateful kids are asleep as this minimizes frustration. *$%$ spikes were really time consuming to attach. Hours of work since I couldn’t figure out how to do it on a machine. Had to do by hand. Attach dragon tail to pants.
- Get up in the morning to see a delighted little boy who then refuses to wear the costume to his sister’s school to show off. But he did wear it trick or treating!

All in all, it was tiring and ever so worth the effort.

Boy I remember days like those! But I do miss having the time to sew homemade halloween costumes! Lucky for me I never had to evacuate during sewing time!
My 13 are up!
how cute! I love it!! Happy T13
Oh man…that is one of the cutest pictures I have ever seen in my life. You are so creative—what a lucky kid. I remember Halloween: all our costumes came from the “dime store” and smelled like kerosene!
We have some glorious photographs this time of autumn….
