Well, not today, but I spent a couple days doing just a bit of that. My mom’s side of the family has a big pre-holidays get together every year, so we traveled for that.

I don’t work a lot when we go on trips because I like the time with my family. One of the big challenges of working at home is learning to take time off, and trips are one of those times I really think about how much I should or should not be working.
But a little bit of work is often a good idea. For me it’s often just quick things, a check of my work at home forums, a blog post or so because I really need to share an idea, that kind of thing.
Of course, what that really means is that I have to be prepared to do that kind of work. Nice thing about online work is that it means all I really need is a computer, an internet connection and my signon information for whichever accounts I might want to access.
I have a simple rule for working on vacation. It’s done first thing in the morning or last thing at night. It’s not allowed to interfere with anything during the day. A crisis may cause me to work longer than I would like to, but one the whole, I’ll rarely work more than a half hour a day when on vacation.
The hardest part about working from someone else’s home is simply the different setup. There’s always a lack of comfort, even when the computer has the same operating system and there’s a decent computer chair. It’s the little things, plus a lack of my usual software. Even thought much of what I do from home is purely online, there are things I need software that is one my computer for.
My someday solution for this is a laptop computer. That’s not in the budget now or for a while, but I expect it will happen someday.
But even with that I expect to minimize my working when on vacation. Time with family is just too important.

Hi Stephanie,
Yep, I guess that’s the upside of working virtually, that you can do it anywhere. And of course the downside is that you CAN do it anywhere and so you do! Wouldn’t swap it for the world though.
