Make up a list and have everyone search for the items on the list. If you have a wide range of ages to deal with, you can make up teams to help balance things out.

This can be done at home or spread things out as appropriate. For example, have pine cones or a particular kind of leaf or flower be on the list that you know is available.

With the popularity of cell phone cameras, it may even be possible to make it a photo hunt. This is an advantage if you don’t want everyone having to pick plants or carry a lot of things. It also allows you to add common local birds or wildlife to the list.
