Lots of people decide they want to start a work at home business instead. Then the big question becomes “what are you going to do?” Getting a great work at home business idea can be tough.

Start Thinking

The first place to look is at your own interests. What do you like to do?

While it isn’t absolutely required that you have passion for the business you decide to go with, it’s a big help. Knowing a lot about whatever your business is about cuts down on the learning curve. You already know a bit about one type of person who would be interested in your business and product… you!

That said, don’t mistake your own interests for the interests of your entire target market, unless you’re going for a rather tight niche. There are usually a range of reasons why someone will be interested in something, and those reasons won’t always be your reasons. Assuming that all your potential customers think the way you do can turn away a lot of business, but it’s not a bad starting point when you’re beginning to figure things out.

Think on your hobbies. Think on jobs you’ve held in the past. Consider how people get started on those things, how they keep doing them, and what they can do when they get really good at them. If you like woodworking, for example, you could consider a business around people getting started in woodworking, improving their woodworking skills, how to sell the woodworking projects they’ve completed, or something else of that sort.

Pick out a few areas you’re interested in, not just one. You’re better off with a few options to consider, not just one idea that might not look so good after further investigation.

Look at Your Target Market

The next step is to figure out how much of a target audience there is for your each of your niches. You want a good sized audience available to you.

One way is to check on the number of searches on keywords relating to your niche. 100 searches a month is an awfully small niche, perhaps not impossible to earn from, but not too likely to generate a solid income, unless it regularly converts to high dollar sales. Most niches, you want more traffic than that, quite a bit more.

Check Out the Competition

You should always check out the competition when you’re getting ready to start a work at home business, just don’t let their presence scare you off. Healthy competition means there are customers out there, a way to make money. It doesn’t matter if they’re huge and have been around for 10+ years. Just check them out.

You want to figure out what you can do to stand out from the competition. Don’t copy them, be better than they are. If you really know your niche, you can figure out a way to stand out.

Figure Out How You’d Earn Money

This is a huge part of any successful business, no matter where you run it. You must know how you’re going to earn money working at it. These days, home businesses have a lot of options.

You can earn money through affiliate marketing, putting up links to related products that will earn you a commission for every lead, action or sale.

You can earn money by joining a network marketing company that offers related products, and sell in person, and in many cases even online.

You can offer a product or service to local businesses offline or online.

You can offer a product or service to online businesses.

You can create your own product for sale and sell it yourself or on sites such as eBay or Etsy.

You can earn money through ads posted on your information based website.

and so on.

Decide Where Your Home Business Will Be

This may sound kind of odd. A home business should be at home, right?

True enough, but will it be a physical business in your home or will it be online. These days I recommend any business having an online presence, but will that be your entire presence or just one part of it?

It’s not so hard as it may sound to get a basic home business website up. Hosting can be quite affordable, under $10 a month, and domain names are quite reasonable too, often under $10 per year. Most hosting packages include quick WordPress installation or a website builder. It will take a bit of time to learn how to run your site and make it look the way you’d like it to look, but they’re a very affordable way to get started.

You can of course pay a website designer to give your site a more professional look, but you’ll have to be ready to put some money into it. Lots of home businesses are started on a shoestring, so that may not be a great place to spend your limited budget. If you can afford it, a professionally designed website does have its advantages.

Site Build It is another option. It costs more upfront, but comes with a lot of tools to help you really get things going. You’ll get tools to help you further brainstorm your business as well as tools to get it running. A lot of people love its features.

Get Started

With some information to back you up, it’s time to figure out which idea you want to go with. Don’t spread yourself out by starting up with multiple ideas at once. That’s sure to mess you up. Pick just one idea and start trying to make it work.

This idea should be one that you’re confident you can make work. Hopefully you have some idea how you’re going to get things started. Don’t delay and don’t worry about getting things perfect. Just get moving.

This is the most important and most neglected step. One of the biggest reasons work at home businesses fail is that their owners don’t take action or quit taking action. You can’t succeed if you don’t even try.

If you’re going to have that website I so strongly recommend having up, get it up right away. Don’t stress about getting every page ready before you publish any of them, just get the basics up and get things moving.

Give It Time

Don’t expect your home business to be an instant success, no matter what you hear others talking about with their businesses, even if they’re similar. Most work at home businesses are not an instant success. It may be months before you get any income at all, and some people work for years with minimal returns. It’s the lucky few who hit it big on a new business, and many of those tried several other businesses before finding the one that worked.

It takes time to learn all the little things that go into making a business successful. Give yourself and your business that time, keep learning how to make your business work better, and plan on working hard. When you find the strategies and niche that work for you, it will be worth it.
<div

Lots of people venture into one such opportunity or another when they get started. It sounds so appealing after all, to build a business with great products and a downline to help you earn even when you don’t make the sale yourself.

There are a number of great direct sales companies you can join too. Some have been around almost since the time direct sales was a possibility, while new companies start every year. Companies come and companies go, making it vital that you choose a good one if this is how you want to make money from home. Losing your business because the company you order products from disappeared is hard, to say the least.

This isn’t the path everyone wants to take when they consider earning money from home. The sales aspect certainly doesn’t appeal to everyone, as most such opportunities have a significant aspect of selling in person as you get started, through holding home parties or by recommending products to people you meet. Many allow for an online aspect these days as well, but it’s not the focus for most. But many people wonder if there’s any other way to legitimately earn money from home.

There are many ways, of course. Some have been done pretty much forever, while others came about because of the internet, for example, daycare, writing, website designing, affiliate marketing, making and selling crafts, graphic design, selling photos, mystery shopping, customer service over the phone, telemarketing, data entry, working as a virtual assistant, technical support, computer programming, blogging, transcription, selling on eBay and other auction sites, running errands, bookkeeping, teaching… the list goes on.

The key here is to figure out what it is you want to do and what you can make money doing. From there you can figure out how to make it work.

You won’t always have to start your own business, of course. There are companies that hire people to work from home, and some of the jobs offer pretty good pay. They aren’t always easy, and they do require you to be professional in your work. If you aren’t visible to anyone else, that means being professional when you speak to people and doing quick, accurate work. Most work at home jobs pay on production in one form or another, so the better and more quickly you do your work, the better off you are. Just don’t sacrifice accuracy because there’s always a high demand for quality.

Running a home business whether online or in person means you must be willing to take the risk of never earning anything. Many fail, but if you succeed you may have a lot more flexibility, depending on the type of business you run. A home daycare operator is not going to have the same flexibility as an affiliate marketer, but one may be more suited to the type of work you’d like to do than the other.

Research Is a Key to Success

If you want to earn money from home successfully, research is the key to any chance you have of success with it. You have to know what you need to do. You can guess and throw yourself into the first opportunity that strikes your fancy, but you’re more likely to fall into a scam than wander into success. That goes whether you’re starting a business or searching for a work at home job.

There must be a match with your skills and interests. There must be a demand for whatever you’re going to do. You must know how you’re going to get things going.

Research also helps to keep your expectations realistic. That’s when you find out that no matter the promises made, you aren’t going to be earning six figures within months. It’s when you realize how much work is really involved. It’s also probably when some of your dreams are dashed by reality. If you had wild dreams of easy success, that’s probably a good thing.

The first thing to check in your research is how to get a start in whatever you’re going to do without getting scammed. Scams outnumber legitimate opportunities when it comes to earning money from home. It’s easy to fall for one. Pay attention and learn what you should be looking for to avoid the scams. Some of the basic signs include the promise of easy money, earning from recruiting rather than selling products, an unclear source of income, a fee for to apply for a job (businesses and information on running one usually cost money; applying for a job should not). When in doubt, ask around and see what others say.

You can avoid a lot of the usual scams if you start your own completely independent business. It’s not a scam to start a business writing for others or designing websites. You do, however, need to figure out how to get clients and make sure they pay you. There are a lot of great people running all kinds of businesses from home and you have to learn to deal with your customers and the competition.

Keep Trying

No matter what it is you choose to do to earn money from home, you’re probably going to have to work at it a while to see results. Just because you can, theoretically, work in your pajamas doesn’t mean it’s easy. You have to really put in the effort to get the results.
<div

We tend to have the idea that women in those days worked primarily in the home. It turns out that in pioneer times, colonial women were earning money for their families in any way that they could. Even if that meant starting their own businesses. Colonial women were running boarding houses, restaurants, trading posts, and even printing presses.

Since I’ve been working in self storage, I’ve met a lot of women. Actually, that’s a bit of an understatement. Some facility managers tell me that 70 percent, or more, of their customers are women. I’ve come to realize that women haven’t changed since colonial American times. They are still a business-savvy, resourceful bunch of entrepreneurs. They believe in keeping costs low and in maximizing profits. One, very sucessful, way to do that is to run a “business in a box” or a business headquartered in a self storage unit. These are some of the businesses I have found women running from storage facilities:

Internet Florist

I met a woman in Houston who runs a florist business from a climate-controlled self storage unit. Her orders all come in online, so she hasn’t felt the need for a storefront business that could take walk-in customers. Instead, she keeps her inventory in a clean, cool unit, fills her orders, and rents a small truck or van from the storage facility from time to time to make deliveries. Recently, she has started branching out into gift baskets for birthdays and holidays. I don’t know that her business will stay in a self storage unit forever (she may want to expand one day), but it certainly works for her now as she does what so many businesspeople are doing: keeping overhead low and riding out the recession.

Handmade Sundries

Not all knitters are women. I was sitting next to a man on a plane recently, and he was knitting a scarf out of hand-painted wool. He looked sort of sheepish about it, but he said that he had been trying to quit smoking and he needed something to do with his hands. Fair enough. Anyway, I commented on the beautiful wool yarn he was using, and he informed me that he had purchased it in, of all places, a self storage unit! Some self storage facilities have “garage” sales from time to time. He had gone to one, and met a woman who spun beautiful wool yarn that she dyed and painted herself. The wool came from the sheep that she was raising at her home in eastern Washington. She had space at home for her wool, but she also had several cats and she had gotten fed up with the cats getting into her yarns. At the same time, her business was growing, so she decided to expand. Now, in addition to her other businesses (I’ve learned that many women who work at home have several businesses that they run simultaneously which doesn’t surprise me a bit, especially in this economy), she has a “business in a box.” She takes her yarn, and items she makes using it, to arts and craft fairs and even advertises in the newspaper. Her regular clients, who have come to love her yarn, will even make appointments with her to buy more.

Specialty Books

As I mentioned before, many women run several businesses at once. A woman I met in Wisconsin ran at least four: she taught yoga, read tarot cards, sold crystals, and has a bookstore dedicated to books that fall into her specialty niche. She collects and sells both used and new books that are focused on metaphysical philosophy and spirituality, as well as alternative healing methods. Since she does not have time to stay in one place in a storefront, and also does not have the funds to support a full-time store in a heavy traffic area, she instead runs her business from the Internet…and keeps her inventory in self storage. She keeps both books and crystals in self storage, and is the only tenant I’ve ever known who took the time to arrange her storage unit according to principles of feng shui. She also has the most beautiful storage unit I’ve ever seen. I said to her one day, “If this is what your storage unit looks like, I can’t imagine how beautiful your home must be!” She just laughed and said that if she was going to spend a lot of time there, she wanted her surroundings to be nurturing. I can’t argue with that!

The Tupperware Model

Remember Tupperware parties? They still exist. Only women have branched out. Now they have book parties, kitchenware parties, educational toy parties, alternative health product parties, etc. I met one woman who runs a business selling essential oils. She is very committed to her oils and has built up a small clientele of like-minded individuals who are interested in having blends of oils to do everything from household cleaning to aromatherapy to room freshening to treating colds and flus. She keeps her inventory in her unit, but also uses it for mixing blended oils for clients and for holding orders that need to be delivered or picked up. Oils don’t take much space to store (they come in tiny bottles that have, at most, an ounce or two of fluid in them) so her business is almost literally a “business in a box” because she rents the smallest unit her facility offers. That’s what I call keeping overhead low!

I love seeing the creative ways that entrepreneurs find to start their own businesses with limited capital and in many cases, limited resources. What I see, especially with women who are trying to run businesses while also being at home for their children, is businesspeople who take the resources and skills that they have and find an imaginative way to use those skills and resources as tools that can support a brand new business. These businesses in some cases are so small and self-contained that I am not sure they should even be called small businesses. They are more like tiny businesses. But when I talk to entrepreneurs who run tiny businesses, what they tell me is that it’s not the size of the business, but the regular flow of income, that makes a big difference in the quality of their lives.

Art Gould is a division manager with Self Storage Company, which operates a group of websites, including a <a

But did you know that there are many choices if you decide to do so?

The first step before starting a work from home business is to forget about the business all together. Don’t think about what kind of business you want or what you want from it or anything like that. Next, write down your life. What have you accomplished in your lifetime so far? What things have you not done that you thought you would have done by now. What things would you like to accomplish or do in the years to come?

Look at your answers and write down goals for yourself. What would you like to achieve and by when would you like to achieve them. What will it take to achieve these goals? Are you in a position now that you will be able to achieve your goals? If not, why not?

These answers and goals should be your motivation for whatever you decide to do. So now you hopefully know what you want out of life!

Getting what you want in life usually involves knowing what you want first. If you get what you want before you even know you wanted it, consider yourself lucky, and don’t throw it away before you realize its value.

There are several advantages to working from your home including flexible working hours, low overhead, and more available time to work while other people are commuting to their jobs. Obviously the appeal of one or more of these can be more than enough for many of us to give working from home a try.

And who knows, maybe a few minutes, hours, or days later, you’ll land a big sale or be rewarded for your efforts like never before. And then you’ll be reminded that, YES! You are doing the right thing! That the “crazy” idea of starting your own home-based business was actually the BEST decision you’ve ever made.

Here are the Top 10 reasons for moms to start a home business

-	Save on Day Care costs
-	No commuting
-	More flexibility
-	Spend more time with your family
-	Save on office attire and lunches
-	Helps you to do something you like
-	To be able to say ‘I own a business’
-	You don’t have to execute your boss’s ideas
-	Satisfied with your own achievements
-	Your time is invested for your betterment

As you can see the benefits are numerous. Take some time today to see if starting a home business is the right choice for you. List the costs of commuting and working outside of your home. List the perks to being home for your children everyday, list the “downers” too. Also make a list of the space, equipment and skills you already possess that will aid you in starting a home based business. And finally, make a list of the possible businesses you could start with the equipment and skill set you just listed. Writing down your thoughts and assets is a great way to see the whole picture as it pertains to you and your family. You may be very surprised where your lists lead you. Give it a try!

Bizymoms.com has been dedicated to helping moms <a
