There are some things in life you just can't live without. But necessities like food really take their toll on your budget when times are tight. Fortunately, there are many ways to save money on food.
The obvious thing is to get coupons whenever possible. They are available in many places, the newspaper and online, to start. Keep them organized so that you can use them before they expire and don't forget them. Many people keep them in their car or purse so they are always there when you go to the store. Know when your local grocery store does double, or better yet, triple coupons.
Plan your meals according to what you can get with your coupons and store specials. Make a shopping list and stick to it. You will be amazed at how quickly those little impulse items can add up, so don't let yourself buy them.
Some items freeze reasonably well, such as meats and cheeses, so if you have the space and find a particularly good deal, stock up.
Have a back yard? Try a garden. Not only can you grow your own fresh fruits and vegetables, it's a great excuse to get outside, and it's good to teach the kids about growing food too. If you grow too much of one thing, see if any of the neighbors want some. They might just give you something from their garden in return.
