Part of being an at-home parent is being able to have lots of fun with your kids. So I decided it's time to help you find new ways to do so.
Of course, not everything here is something the kids need your help with. There are lots of games for them to play alone, with siblings or with friends.
My goal here is to help you find kid-friendly activities that will fit any budget. There are lots of fun things you can do with your children whether at home or on the road.
I also hope to bring you stores you may not have heard of before. Hopefully this will give you new ideas for playing with your kids, decorating their rooms and just plain having fun.
Make Holiday Decorations – Free Fun Friday
With the holiday season coming up, it’s a great time to express your creativity as a family and start making holiday decorations. For Halloween, for example, you can cut bats out of black construction paper, make ghosts out of tissue paper, and so on.
There are tons of sites with ideas, and if you’re like me [...]
Sharpie "Tie Dye" T-Shirt Activity
My mother saw this activity when she was at the Maker Faire earlier this year. She was impressed by how simple it is.
First you need some plain white t-shirts. I suppose you could use other colors, but then it’s harder for kids to figure out how their colors are going to turn out.
You can also [...]
Find Things for a Collage – Free Fun Fridays
One of the fun things about taking a family walk is all the leaves and such you can find. Take advantage and make a collage when you get home.
You can think of different themes or just do a “stuff we found” collage. Maybe look for seeds, or different kinds of leaves.
This can be a great [...]
Improvise Musical Instruments – Free Fun Friday
This is a great way to teach younger kids about recycling. Save up some cans or water bottles and use them to make musical instruments. If you use a side can opener it is pretty easy to tape the lid back on, and there won’t be any sharp edges to worry about.
Put beans or rice [...]
I Like This Way of Dyeing Easter Eggs
We got our Easter eggs dyed yesterday. I tried the crayon shavings bit just to see how it would go, and it produces decent looking eggs. But I like another method better, that we also tried for the first time this year. It also produces a sort of tie dye effect.
Boil the eggs (of course) [...]
Tie Dye Easter Eggs
Easter eggs don’t all have to be dyed using those store bought kits. One of the things I want to try this year is a tie dye appearance for our eggs. I found these instructions for them on another site. We have some crayon shavings already, which I think we’ll use. They were going to [...]
Graham Cracker House
I mentioned yesterday and the day before that I was going to help my kids make a graham cracker house this year before Christmas. It’s finally done and I thought I would share how we did it.
Ingredients:
graham crackers
assorted candies such as gum, spice drops, Spree, whatever you want to put on it
royal icing
Here’s the recipe [...]
Encouraging Your Kids in Science
Young children love to learn. The preschool and elementary school years are a great time to build an interest in science that will last through their educational career and perhaps beyond.
Don’t be intimidated by whatever knowledge you may have of science. You don’t have to know it all. You don’t have to be advanced in [...]
Thursday Thirteen – 13 of My Kids' Favorite Projects and Activities
My kids love to do projects. My daughter is old enough to come up with some ideas of her own, but she also enjoys ones that I help her with. And since we got a start today by doing a project, I thought I would share.
Today’s project: Play Dough. And here’s the recipe:
2-1/2 cups flour
1/2 [...]
Today's Experiment – Yeast
Every here and there Ariel demands an experiment. We go online and find something we have the supplies for on hand. Hence today’s experiment with yeast.
This is probably the most basic thing you can do with yeast. Feed it and watch it grow.
You’ll need:
1 package yeast (about 2 teaspoons)
1 tsp sugar
1/4 cup warm water
Medium or [...]
