A cleverly decorated child's room is fun to make and fun for the kids to live in. The trick is coming up with ideas that will age well, so that you don't have to redecorate every other year... or at least not much.
It can be as simple as painting the room, and you don't have to be all that accurate. For several years, my mother had one room set aside as a play room that was painted in pink and purple to look like scenes from the Lorax. My niece's room has clouds on sky blue walls. Paint doesn't cost much, although for kids I recommend getting an eggshell or satin finish at the very least, rather than flat, so the walls are easier to keep clean.
There are wall decals now that are much easier to get off than traditional wallpaper, so you don't have to worry so much about getting them off when your kids outgrow them. There is furniture sized for children. Put in some boxes or cubbies to help organize your kids' toys, and the room is ready to go.
It doesn't have to be difficult. My husband and I made a table for our daughter, which was a lot of fun, but probably more work than most people would want to go through. But, as you can see below, it looks great.
That one took a fair bit of work, cutting out the table top and painting the design. Don't worry, pretty much everything I suggest here will be much simpler to create. Clouds on the wall, for example are very easy.
