Science may sound intimidating, but it can be a lot of fun. Science can be as simple as measuring rainfall or it can be a project good enough for a science fair. Taught properly, science emphasizes the kind of discovery most children love well.
Astronomy, chemistry, physics, earth science, weather... they're all topics you can cover at home. You don't have to have a college degree in any of them to show your children the principles.
Astronomy and weather are perhaps the easiest. Who hasn't gone outside to look at the stars, looked for meteors (falling stars, for those who prefer the popular words) or noticed the phases of the moon. And it's so easy to measure rainfall or look at the different kinds of clouds.
A good science teacher will make your child enthusiatic about learning science. An understanding of science can encourage your child to take more challenging classes in high school and college. A solid background in science can help your child throughout his or her life.
Good science toys can also engage your child's fascination with science and encourage them to learn.
For younger children, a butterfly garden may be a good choice. I've done something like this with my daughter, although we were fortunate enough to find the catepillars in our own backyard, so we just picked up a small plastic terrarium at the pet store and raised them there.
If your kids really enjoy bugs, as many do, a bug vacuum may be a good choice too. It's an easy way to catch bugs without touching or harming them, and they're easy to release.
Of course, who could ever forget the classic volcano experiment? Kids love this one.
Rockets are great fun for kids. Take a look at Apogee Components. Not only do they have a great selection of parts; they offer software to help your budding rocket scientist design rockets before building them.
Take a look through these stores for more great science toys for your children. You'll have lots of fun making discoveries together.
