Go Fly a Kite!

When there's a nice breeze and a place free of obstacles, flying a kite is lots of fun for all ages. From kites with favorite characters for the kids to stunt kits for the more experienced, just about anyone will enjoy flying a kite.

Before you choose a kite, it's a good idea to know more about when and where you should fly a kite. The right conditions make kite flying much easier and more fun, especially for beginners.

While you want some wind, you don't want too strong a wind either. If the leaves on trees and bushes are moving, there's probably enough wind to fly a kite. If the wind is blowing hard you might be best off waiting for another day.

Stay away from roads, power lines, trees and airports. Yes, airports, although let's face it, most people don't think of flying their kites near the airport anyhow. Kites easily get caught in trees, as trees can make the direction of the wind more unpredictable. Power lines are simply dangerous should the kite get caught on them, and you don't want to have your kite distract a driver by coming down on their car, or have your kids run into the street to get a kite that has fallen into the road.

If the weather is stormy, abosolutely do not fly a kite! You do not need to pretend to be Benjamin Franklin.

The simplest way to get a basic kite in the air is to hold it up in one hand, holding the string with the other, and start running into the wind. You can also have a friend hold the kite up while you run, then release the kite. Pull in the line a little as the kite goes to encourage it to climb.
