Party Games

Whether it's for a birthday or to just get together, kids love parties. But when it comes time to plan, sometimes it's hard to come up with good games for them to play.

Pinatas are always fun. Stuff it with candy and small, age-appropriate toys. You need a place big enough for a blindfolded child to swing a stick without hitting anyone or anything you don't want hit, not to mention space for the goodies to come flying out.

Pinatas can be had for fairly cheap. Even stores such as Target may carry them in their party aisles. If you're the creative type, you can make one. We did that once when I was growing up. We blew up ballons then covered them in newspaper strips dipped in a flour and water mixture. Pop the ballons when it's dry and fill. The hardest part about this kind of pinata is that you may have to fill each section individually, unless you can puzzle out how to connect them as you make it.

Pin the tail on the donkey is another party classic. Of course, you don't have to stick to the traditional donkey and tail. You can create your own to fit the theme.

Treasure hunts can be fun. You know how much the kids love hunting eggs at Easter, so you can be sure of how much fun this will be at a party. One alternative would be to form teams and have them follow clues to the treasure. Have each team follow a slightly different set of clues if you're up for that, so that they don't just follow each other around.

Crafts can be fun for kids. Check out your local craft store for ideas relating to the theme or that the kids will enjoy - necklace making is popular with little girls, of course, no matter the theme.

Charades is always a popular game. Have one kid go up front and pick a card with whatever they are supposed to pretend to be, and have the other kids start guessing.

Is the weather hot? How about a water balloon fight? You can split the kids up into teams or just have a free-for-all.

Musical chairs is another old favorite. Play the music and stop it at random times, and everyone has to try to find a chair. Take away one chair each time. One variation has the person who doesn't get a chair be out of the game; another says that they must sit on someone else's lap. That variation gets pretty funny when you're down to one chair, but may not be good if the kids are too young.
