When you take a family vacation, and it's not to visit family, you have to think about what you're going to enjoy as a family. Visiting historical monuments and museums may be fun for you, but not all kids will appreciate it. Amusement parks are fun, but if you have infants or toddlers they can put a pretty serious damper on the fun as someone has to stay with them as everyone else goes on the rides.
You want to know that your family will have a generally good time. Don't expect the vacation to be stress-free; you'll just set yourself up for disappointment if things don't go just right. But do think about what as many people as possible will enjoy.
Camping is a personal favorite. It's hard to do with small children but still possible, especially if the weather is very nice and there's room in the tent for a Pack n' Play. It's simpler once everyone is old enough for their own sleeping bag. Then you just have to keep track of the kids as they explore their fascinating new surroundings and see the wildlife.
Do not overplan your trip. If you have a strict time schedule you'll regret it whenever you find something you'd like to do for a longer time than you allowed. Overly strict schedules also cause a lot of stress. Remember - if you're going on vacation, the idea is to relax. Get to your destination and have fun!
Trips can be anything from a day trip to the amusement park to a long vacation far from home. You might drive, fly or even take a cruise. Think about which is the best alternative for your family trip as a part of the planning.
Most vacations are primarily for fun, but there's no reason you can't add a little education. Take a look at what your destination has to offer. There might be a good museum, historical buildings or sites. You don't have to stay long, but sometimes these little stops are quite a bit of fun. I like the Science Center near the Space Needle in Seattle... haven't been there in years, but the place was huge and very well done. Little stops like that are really great.
