When you head out of the house, there's a lot of gear you need. Some things pretty much stay in the car, such as car seats for those who need them (up to 8 years old in some states, but varies by state), but other things may not be welcome in the car much of the time. Travel potty seat, shopping cart seat covers, strollers... some people don't mind keeping them in the car, but others do.
The rules have changed so much since you and I were kids. Car seats are required now, and for longer periods. They have to meet stricter safety regulations. You always hear stories about how many car seats are not installed properly. Overall, there's a lot to worry about. Some worries can be eased by checking with your local fire or police station and seeing if they do car seat checks, to ensure that yours is correctly installed.
But when you go on vacation, it's time to have fun while being prepared to meet the needs of your kids. You want gear that is both fun and practical. My husband and I love our baby backpack as well as the Snugli. They've let us go hiking even with very young children. Strollers don't do well on all terrain, after all.
