When you choose toys for your kids to travel with, you want to be sure that they are suitable for the car. That means pieces aren't likely to get lost, they will keep the kids entertained for reasonable periods and they aren't too big.
You want to think, however, about whether or not to risk particular favorite toys to the chances of the road. Can you cope with the loss of that toy? If your child cannot sleep without a particular toy, it is probably best to discourage taking it to the store; yet it may be necessary to take it on vacation.
Depending on the ages of your children, games, books, movies or music may be appropriate to bring along. Magnetic games are a popular choice, as they let the kids play together while minimizing the chances that pieces will be lost. Other games you don't have to bring along - they just require your imagination and a quick eye. Encourage the kids to try to spot something and have the first call out when they spot it. You can use anything - a particular color of car, a truck carrying something, a landmark... it just depends on you.
Traveling With Kidz has a great selection of toys and gear to help you travel with your children. They also offer practical advice. If you have trouble remembering everything you need to bring, they have downloadable checklists. They're worth checking out.
