Halloween is a night for fun, maybe getting a little scared. But there's no reason to let your manners terrify your host. Whether you're attending yourself or just sending your child, the usual manners do apply no matter the holiday.
The invitation may or may not specify if this is a costumed event. If this is clearly stated on the invitation, you or your child can probably wear just about any appropriate costume, but if you have any doubts you can call and ask about preferences. Some people don't approve of scary costumes, for example. Other times Halloween parties are themed, and you might not have noticed or heard about that part.
Be clear on what is expected of the guests. If guests are expected to bring something, whether it be food, candy or other items, bring them and bring enough to share.
Participate in the fun and games. It can be very disappointing when one person refuses to have fun with the rest. Most games are more fun for the participants than the audience.
Be on time and know what time you are expected to leave. While you don't have to be there at the very minute the party is supposed to start, excessively late without good reason is very poor manners. Worse is leaving significantly later than the other guests without being invited to stick around. By the end of the party, the hosts are generally very tired and just want to get on with the cleanup or maybe just off to bed.
Pick up after yourself. There's probably a trash can in easy access for all your trash. Rather than just leaving your cups and paper plates and candy wrappers all over the house, throw them out. It doesn't take that much effort.
Do not bring uninvited guests. This can be challenging for parents with children of two different ages and one has a party to go to. You can ask the hosts about bringing siblings, but don't bring them along without explicit permission.
Halloween parties are loads of fun for both kids and adults. But that doesn't excuse forgetting the manners you would use on other occasions. Find other ways to have a frightfully good time than by leaving a horrendous mess.
