The Editor's Desk - From Beneath the Clutter

Arrggh! I hate it when my internet connection keeps vanishing. I'm on a cable modem, so this isn't a common problem, but it's been up and down since Saturday, which is very frustrating when it comes time to get anything done.

We got the house, so we'll be moving next week. I may or may not get a newsletter out - depends on how smoothly packing goes. There's so much I have to get done right now, and just about a week to get it done in. Hopefully this will be the last move for a while.

So You Think It's Easy To Become An Internet Entrepreneur

You want to become an Internet Entrepreneur ?

It depends. On whether you are committed and ready. If you are, then you need to know the top two problems in starting an online business.

There are tons of information nowadays on the Internet, on every imaginable subject, which professes to teach you everything you need to know about starting online businesses.

You will quickly become an Internet Information junkie, what with all those newsletters you signed up, those free eBooks you downloaded (and hardly finding any time to read them), those free online courses via emails, and the list just goes on. You might actually have spent some money in some eBooks and online courses.

At one point you might want to get out of the learning phase, and ACTUALLY start doing something. This is what I called the Number One problem : Execution !

Yes, simple as it sounds, actually getting started is one big hurdle. You might be in a stage of what is commonly known as "Analysis Paralysis", which you analyse too much on what you are considering to do, then you become "paralysed". Nothing gets done. And this is not helped by so much information "freely" available nowadays.

So the message is this : Just Do It, while you can. Make the most of whatever available time you have, and get off the runway.

Start by planning what you want to do and write it down. Then find out enough of what you need to know, then start the execution phase. Enough of reading and learning, the time to start is NOW.

Okay, you have finally acted upon your plans. You now need to confront the Number Two problem in online business.

Before I go into that, you may also have experienced the countless offers, services and tools that you come across on a daily basis, via emails or while surfing. The question now is - how do you know which one works and which one not ?

You wouldn't know until you try. Nothing comes free nowadays, and even if it is free, it will lead to something which you will have to fork out some money eventually. Whatever you have set out to do in your online ventures, and assuming you have planned and researched well, some of these tools are useful while some are just a distraction.

Did I mention distraction ? Yes, distraction is the Number Two problem. Distraction prevents you from achieving your ultimate objective of making money online. Distraction pulls you away from what you started out to do in the first place, or at best slows you down.

You need tools and knowledge to achieve your goals. Your goals are fundamentally deciding on something, plan it well, execute, increase traffic, then converting those traffic into paying customers. At every step of the way, there will be distraction, there will be offers promising big rewards with no need for real work.

It is how you stay focused that will differentiate you from the many under-performing online dreamers. Online ventures involve commitment of time and money, though the capital to start out is substantially lower than that of a conventional brick-and-mortar business.

One way to stay focused is to pen down your action plan, be it a to-do list or a structured timetable. Then when there are offers you need to look at, and you think it is worth looking at, and not just another SPAM, then put it on your to-do list and prioritize. You need to prioritize, or else your list is going to grow, and important tasks that you planned for will never get executed.

Remember, focus, focus, focus….

Encouraging Your Child To Write

How in the world do you get your child to write? This is the battle cry of many parents. A lot of imagination, with a little bribery (or praise) is all you need to get your child writing. We'll supply the imagination. The praise and bribery is all up to you.

Grocery List: Enlist your child's help in making the grocery list. Walk around the kitchen, naming things you need from the store. Ask your child to write everything down. Your child can also suggest foods you might need from the store and he can add those, too.

Old Checks: If you've recently switched banks and have checks that need to be destroyed, first let your child play with them. Give him some envelopes and he can pretend to pay bills -- while getting him to do some writing. Of course, destroy the checks afterwards. If you do not have checks available, you can just give your child some blank pieces of paper and he can make his own checks.

Cards: If your child is interested in Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh cards, then give him some index cards cut in half and have him design his own cards. Encourage your child to give the characters names and special abilities on their cards.

Fictional Journal: Sometimes it is hard for children to write in a journal. What is there to write about? Instead of a standard journal, give your child a fictional journal. He or she can pretend to be anything they'd like to be and write a journal as that person. Your child could write from the perspective of an Astronaut discovering a new planet, Prince or Princess on an Adventure, Archaeologist finding a new species of Dinosaur, Famous Athlete, President of a Country, Passenger on the Titanic. Your child could write from the perspective something instead of someone, a mailbox, an animal, a pen. The possibilities are endless.

Letter-writing: Have your child write a letter to Santa, the Easter bunny, or the Tooth Fairy. Or, your child could write to their favorite athlete, fictional character, or movie star.

Alphabet Game: Take a piece of paper and write the letters A-Z in the left column. Then, choose a category from the following or make up one of your own. Vegetables, Fruits, Animals, Musical Instruments. For older children, the categories can be narrower and more difficult, like Countries, Characters in Literature, Presidents, etc. Set a timer and you and your child both list as many of the items in the category as you can for each letter. The trick at the end is that you have to cross off anything on your list that your child has listed. (for instance, if you both have "apple" for an "a" fruit, then the parent crosses theirs off.) Whoever has the most words wins.

Character Game: Tell your child to pick a character from a book or movie that he's familiar with, and you do the same. Then, ask several questions and you each write the answers to the questions on a piece of paper. When you've finished asking the questions, then have your child read the answers and try to guess who he was pretending to be. You do the same and see if your child can guess who you were. Whether you are pretending to be Peter Pan or Shrek, you and your child will have fun and your child won't even realize he's practicing his writing!
