The Editor's Desk - From Beneath the Clutter

This past week has definitely been interesting for me. Ariel turned 5 and we had a really fun birthday party for her.

But it was also one of those times where you learn how the world has changed. Last week there were threatened shootings at a few local schools. Nothing happened; the threats were not deemed credible. But that didn't stop the schools from taking action.

I got two automated calls on the topic. Both after the fact as my daughter does not attend one of the threatened schools.Those parents did get immediate calls, though. But I got one call from the school superintendent and one from the director of the preschool program, just to keep us up to date on what was going on and to let me know that additional security was being sent to all schools.

And then yesterday I was helping in my daughter's class. That was pretty interesting, as the teacher had been informed that morning that she is to keep the classroom door locked when class is in session. We also had a lockdown drill. 10 minutes of having the kids sit under the tables as quietly as possible with the lights off. And they sent someone to check every class to make sure all doors were locked.

It just seems sad to me that kids have to learn that drill in addition to the others now. They don't particularly understand why they had to sit so long, but they did a really great job of it.

Teaching Children The Value of Healthful Snacking

Today, more than ever children should be eating healthier. For millions of children in America consuming junk food and not being active enough has contributed to obesity and many kids being above ideal weight. Not only is it important to teach your child which snacks they should eat, but educating them during the early, formidable years may help them sidestep obesity and becoming overweight in the future when they are adults. Here are some hints on yummy healthy snacks for kids.

One idea for your children to enjoy healthy snacks is to get them started on naturally sweet foods. Since many kids crave sweets for snacks, naturally sweet foods such as fruits are perfect. Let them enjoy a banana, orange, apple, cherries, strawberries and other berries whenever they have a sweet tooth. You can stir in yogurt or even make a fruit smoothie for them with some milk and a drop of chocolate or other natural flavors.

Another great idea for your little ones to enjoy healthy snacks is to serve them fresh nuts. Children love peanuts, walnuts, sunflower seeds, almonds, etc. One of the things to recognize about kids is that if they try enough types of natural and healthy snacks, they will find one that they love. The problem is that more often than not parents give up trying to find the snacks that their kids love and settle for popular junk foods instead.

When choosing a healthy snack, what you want to stay away from are products containing lots of sugars, unwanted preservatives and empty calories. While most kids will fight you tooth and nail if you make them eat wheat germ and tofu, many children will be more than happy to eat snacks if they have a sweet taste and are presented in the right way.

Other healthy snacks that many children appreciate are dry cereals. For example, there are numerous breakfast cereals that are made from corn, wheat, bran and include nuts and honey. These cereals when consumed at breakfast usually include milk; however, you can simply serve them dry to your children. One of the standard dry cereals which are healthy and nutritious for your kid at almost any age is Cheerios. Cheerios are lightly sweetened and yummy either moistened with milk or dry. If your kid craves a delicious snack for lunch or to take along for camp or little league, dry cereal is not only nutritious, but delicious.

For those children that are incredibly fussy and only want junk food, one strategy to use in order to get your child to eat nutritious snacks is to buy premade natural snacks. Today, there are tons of premaded snacks that may look like junk food, but are actually healthy and nutritious for your kid. They include certain fruit roll ups, string cheese and granola bars. Many of these snacks resemble junk food, but are actually made from natural ingredients and include relatively little sugar and empty calories.
