The insurance field has a variety of positions where it may be possible to work from home. Now, you must keep in mind that this is from home, not at home. You will spend a lot of time in the field, meeting with clients. But with proper scheduling this can be an excellent work from home job for parents with children in school. You would need to schedule your time outside the home when school is in session, and would probably need childcare during vacations and breaks.

I speak from experience of sorts on this topic. My mother worked as a worker's compensation insurance auditor for several years when I was growing up. She did have to go to the office much of the time, as her position was not strictly a telecommuting position and laptop computers were not exactly common at the time, but even so she was able to do a fair amount of work at home. These days it is much easier for auditors and others in the insurance industry to work from a home office.

What kinds of jobs are there? As previously mentioned, there's auditing. This isn't working for the IRS, although that is what pops into mind for many people when they hear the word "audit". However, some businesses may love you about that much, since you are checking for accuracy and may end up costing them money in terms of increased premiums.

You could also be a loss control consultant. In this case, you'd be traveling to insured sites and evaluating them. You would be determining whether policies should be issued or renewed.

Many of these positions require either experience or a degree, and sometimes both. A good company will offer paid training as well as benefits. You may be paid on production, as it is very difficult to track a home based employee's hours.

This kind of work from home job has a lot of advantages for those whose children are either in school or are old enough to not need their parents to be right there. You have a lot of control over your work schedule, as you can set yourself up to go to client locations when the kids are in school, then finish things off at your home office. However, you will need to plan for times when your children will be home, and you must know how you are going to finish your work.

So far I know of one company hiring people to work from home offices in this area, but I hope to hear of more soon (thanks, mom!)
