Why Are We So Far Behind?

When you look at what many of the rest of the wealthy countries do for families, you really have to wonder about the United States. There just isn’t much apparent value placed on us by society.

Perhaps the worst is that we often lag behind middle and low income countries in what we do for families. Pathetic.

We’re one of 5 countries out of 173 surveyed that don’t guarantee some sort of paid maternity leave, for example. 65 countries even give fathers paternity leave.

While many states do guarantee a woman’s right to breastfeed, the federal government does not. This puts us behind the 107 countries that do. Read the rest of this entry »

Time to Overhaul the School System?

I found out about this over at Blogging Baby and just had to read it for myself and hear what others think. A commission of education and business leaders took a look at our school systems and made their recommendations. Not so sure that I agree with parts of it.

Let’s face it, many of our school systems are in trouble. They just aren’t getting the job done. But deciding what to do can be very difficult.

A Breath of Sanity from a School Board

OK, I know some will disagree about me on this one, otherwise the school board in Georgia wouldn’t have had to make this decision. They voted against a mother’s petition to have the Harry Potter books removed from the school’s library. They didn’t even need to discuss it.

The mother behind the request sees it as an anti-Christian bias. I honestly don’t see it that way. For one, the Harry Potter books don’t strike me as anti-Christian, promoting witchcraft… you probably know the routine. They’re fantasy. She hasn’t read them, she has merely read what others who disapprove of the books have said about them. Read the rest of this entry »
