That’s what this article on WebMD<\/a> says a new study shows. Early math skills were a better predictor of academic success than reading, and a much better predictor of academic success than early social skills.<\/p>\n

Math skills were three times as strong a predictor of future success as ability to pay attention, the only behavioral or social skill to show an effect in the Duncan study.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That part is very interesting to me. It can be really hard to get my daughter to pay attention sometimes, although she is improving. On the other hand, she has long been able to do some basic work with numbers. If you ask her how she does it she often doesn’t know, but she was doing some basic addition at 3.<\/p>\n

There is some debate as to the accuracy of these results, of course. What kind of a study would it be if somebody didn’t dispute them? At least that’s how it seems sometimes.<\/p>\n

I do like the advice near the end of the article to avoid flash cards and other boring educational activities and follow your child’s lead. I’ve always done that with my kids, and both have picked up a lot of skills very early on. My son is already counting over 10 and commenting on how many of various things he sees, or when one is missing. It’s natural to him.<\/p>\n

Most important in my opinion is to pay attention to what is working for your child. This doesn’t mean you should try to generate a math prodigy. There’s a possibility that a little extra focus on numbers could help, but it’s not so proven that you should get anxious about it.<\/p>\n
