Being a work at home mom is hard. I knew that from the start. But knowing you’re taking on a challenge doesn’t mean you can’t grumble about it.

I have noticed one thing, however. Some of my most productive days are my busiest ones.

Not always. There are the days where life just gets so crazy that there is no way to get any business kinds of work done. That doesn’t mean I didn’t accomplish anything, of course. Just that I worked on other things.

You can’t tell me that doing the things my family needs count as “nothing.”

But so many really busy days for me turn out to be the ones that I can really clamp down and get online work done too. And I think the reason is simple.

Those are the days I KNOW I have no time to goof off.

On easier days it’s easy to get sucked into reading blogs and not leave any comments. Or reading sites just for leisure. Or posting on Facebook. Or playing online games. I have time, after all. Right? Right??

If I have laundry to do, errands to run, a cranky child or so to deal with, I know I have to take my available work time that much more seriously. Sometimes I make that work in my favor and take advantage of every bit of available work time I can get. And on those days that’s not easy.

I guess in some ways not easy works for me. Good thing too, with a home business.

It really is about the mindset. Tell yourself you have plenty of time to have fun and work, and it’s easy to take too much time for fun. Tell yourself that time is scarce and you can push yourself to take more advantage of it.

Best, no doubt, is to convince yourself that you have plenty of time and be capable of taking advantage of it. I don’t manage that as often as I’d like.

When do you work best? When you have lots of time for it, just a little or somewhere in between?

I grumble sometimes about how much I have to do.
