This is one of those controversies that never ends. The question of whether it is better to be a working mother and provide a more comfortable life for your family or be a stay at home mother and always be there for your family.

Good arguments can be made either way. The reason for this is, to me, pretty simple. Whether it is right for a woman to work outside the home or stay at home depends on the woman and the situation.

In today’s world, not every woman is going to be happy or comfortable as a stay at home mom. Girls don’t grow up in this country with that as their only option. Asking them all to stay at home is demanding that many be miserable.

Many women would prefer to use the skills that they learned before becoming mothers. I can’t say that I blame them. There’s nothing like making a good living doing something you know well.

However, being a stay at home mom does not necessarily mean giving up on using those skills. This is the part of the argument that so many leave out. What about the work at home mothers?

A work at home mom is no longer just the Avon or Mary Kay lady. While many women do still choose to represent those companies and enjoy doing so, the options today are much wider than they were in the past.

For example, I majored in Communications in college. Went on to become a medical transcriptionist after training myself for that. I took some website design in college and wouldn’t you know, that’s the skill I developed still further as a stay at home mom, and it is what allows me to continue in that way now.

However, even with the ability to work at home as I do, many women would not do well at home. They just don’t have the personality that goes well with being at home all day with the kids.

Believe it or not, that is not a criticism of them as mothers. If you are doing the best you can for your family and in your particular case it happens to mean working outside the home solely because you prefer it that way, there is nothing wrong with that in my book.

Being a stay at home mom is a challenge, and that challenge does not interest every woman. Just as I don’t expect all mothers to follow my footsteps and be stay at home moms, I like it when working moms can see that stay at home moms are working hard too.
