Reading and Writing Together, Week 4
Getting to this a few days late, but for the most part I’ve been having a lot of fun. We spent Sunday at SeaWorld. Monday I went shopping. So finally today I realized I still hadn’t written this up.
The class started with the kids playing with blankets. The teacher had them put the blankets in front of them, beside them, behind them, between the knees, etc. It’s a sort of vocabulary practice.
A big part of the class was having the kids practice storytelling. One tactic was to put 3-4 unrelated items in a paper bag, and have the kids pull them one at a time and use them to tell a story. Ariel got pretty creative with this one.
The parents also had to read a story to the kids, then have the kids retell it in their own words. This is easiest, of course, when the story is familiar to the child, but can be done with new ones also. Write down the story so that you can read to your child what they told you.
A daily ritual of reading was also encouraged. This is, of course, rather obvious to a class about encouraging your child to read and write.
The kids also had a cutting, stamping and gluing activity to do, making Valentines. They were encouraged to write their names. Since the children in these classes are as young as 3 years old, not all can write yet.
