Thursday Thirteen – 13 Things I Love About Being a Stay at Home Mom

Being a stay at home mom is not easy every day. There are days that it drives me up the wall. But on average I love it and have no intention of trading what I do.

  1. Being able to help in my daughter’s classroom. It’s just quick things, like helping with the morning read, but it’s so nice to be able to do that without worrying about what time it is.
  2. Time enough to cook for my family. I love not having to eat out a lot.
  3. Never having to find a good daycare. I have nothing against good daycares, but finding good ones is tough, as I understand it.
  4. Having time to read to my kids when they want to be read to.
  5. Being able to work from home so I still bring some money it, yet with a flexible enough schedule to be able to focus on my kids.
  6. Having a husband supportive of my choices.
  7. Lunch at home. I like having an easy way to use up leftovers or make what I feel like having.
  8. Seeing how creative my kids can be… all day long!
  9. Working on projects with my kids.
  10. No question who has to take time off if one of the kids is sick. Sick kids aren’t much fun, but at least there’s less stress.
  11. The ability to cope with my son’s speech therapy needs without explaining it to an employer.
  12. I love that I was able to discover a career option I probably never would have considered if I had worked outside the home.
  13. Taking the kids to the park spontaneously.

Never having to find a good daycare is priceless. For me, it’s also “Being able to wake up when I’m actually done sleeping.”

  6. I was just at the school today for an hour. And yesterday for an hour. And… well, yeah. It IS nice to have these luxuries, isn’t it?

(and I eat less when I eat at home. I like that!)

Your #10 was one of the reasons I became a stay at home Mom. When my oldest son was born, I kept working and he went to daycare, but every time he would catch one of those little colds that babies get, the daycare wouldn’t take him and I would have to stay home. My employer only gave us 10 personal days a year, and after I used those up, they told me they would fire me if I had another one. I was pregnant with Nathan, and along with realizing how much daycare for two kids was going to cost, I knew I would just need more sick days. I couldn’t stand the stress anymore!

Stephanie, they do now but for years they were both very early risers. By the time my youngest ingrained an early wake-up habit in me, he’d grown up enough to decide he wanted to sleep later himself. I just kept the habit of getting up a bit before him, if only so I have a chance to use the bathroom without having to talk through the door.
