Not everyone is comfortable telecommuting right away. In fact, many people find it extremely challenging. It’s quite a switch going from working in the office, coworkers all around, boss nearby, to working at home with all the distractions, no coworkers, a boss that is harder to impress, and the requirement that you manage to keep to your schedule without so direct supervision.
One of the big reasons people feel uncomfortable is the realization that if you want to be promoted, you are not directly in the sight of your boss. It is very much harder to impress your boss when you aren’t in the office.
The key to dealing with this is to make sure to keep your boss updated on what you have been doing. Some find it best to work a day or two a week in the office. Others make sure to email their boss regularly, call or use instant messaging software. You want to make your progress clear without making a pest of yourself.
The social aspect of working is often missed. Just think about all the time you stop and chat with coworkers, whether about work-related topics or other things. It’s very hard to do that from home. You will need to become comfortable with this kind of change.
Keeping focused is another challenge. You have access to your television when you work at home. You have a house you could be cleaning or organizing. You might have children underfoot, or pets.
Working despite these distractions takes dedication. Sometimes you won’t be able to help but be distracted. If you have to call in someone to repair a problem, you are going to be distracted, and you need to cope with that. It can mean moving your working hours about a bit.
One big mistake many telecommuters make is to assume that because they are working at home, they don’t need to pay for a daycare to watch their children. This is not always the case. Whether or not you can do this depends on your job, how flexible your hours are, your children, and your ability to cope with the distractions children provide.
For many, telecommuting is a huge benefit from their jobs. For others, it’s a challenge and sometimes even an unwelcome option. If you are not comfortable with telecommuting, it may simply not be for you. Or you may need time to adjust and to learn how to communicate remotely with your boss and coworkers.
